Sistema de medición elaborado por A.C. Nielsen en 1950, que indica el nivel de sintonía de los programas de televisión en EE.UU. Actualmente cuenta con una muestra de aproximadamente 5.

000 hogares, donde un medidor conectado a cada televisor registra el canal que está siendo observado y envía los datos a un computador central. Existen botones para cada miembro familiar, que indican qué programa está viendo una determinada persona. El sistema además contempla encuestas en sectores de gran consumo medial. Las mediciones se extrapolan en la audiencia total de cada programa; p. ej., un índice de 20 indica que el 20% de los hogares de EE.UU. está viendo un programa en particular. Las cadenas comerciales de televisión utilizan los resultados de medición para establecer los valores de la publicidad para cada programa, como también para determinar su continuidad dentro de la parilla programática.
